PR�FACE
Charles Baudelaire avait un ami, Auguste Poulet-Malassis, ancien �l�ve
de l'�cole des Chartes, qui s'�tait fait �diteur par go�t pour les
raffinements typographiques et pour la litt�rature qu'il jugeait en
�rudit et en artiste beaucoup plus qu'en commer�ant; aussi bien ne fit-
il jamais fortune, mais ses livres devenus assez rares sont depuis
longtemps tr�s recherch�s des bibliophiles.
Les po�sies de Baudelaire diss�min�es un peu partout dans les petits
journaux d'avant-garde comme le _Corsaire_ et jusque dans la grave
_Revue des Deux-Mondes,_ n'avaient point encore, en 1857, �t�
r�unies en volume. Poulet-Malassis, que le g�nie original de Baudelaire
enthousiasmait, s'offrit de les publier sous le titre de _Fleurs du
Mal,_ titre neuf, audacieux, longtemps cherch� et trouv� enfin non
point par Baudelaire ni par l'�diteur, mais par Hippolyte Babou.
