expresiones la misma diferencia que entre lengua latina y lenguas
atinas.

characters, _I should rather imagine_ that the ancient Tagala mode of
writting was from the botton to top.

[27] _Baybayin_ es una palabra que ya no est� hoy en uso, porqu�
significa una cosa que ya no existe, cual es el _Alfabeto propio
Tagalog_. En muchas lenguas se nombra el alfabeto segun sus tres �
cuatro primeras letras; asi decimos _Abecedario_, � _Alfabeto_ del
griego ([alpha beta]). Los Arabes lo llaman Alif-b[.a]-ta ([Arabian:
a,b,t]). Los Javaneses llaman el alfabeto _Charakan_, que quiere decir
�mensaje� y los Tagalog _Baybayin_, �alineacion, fila.�
[28] Hoy dia se llama _sulat_, un escrito y una letra. El P. San Lucar
dice que _titic_ significa _letra, escritura_. Nos parece que _sulat_
no significo primitivamente mas que _escritura, cosa escrita_, y que
hoy, por estension, quiere tambien decir _letra_. _Titik_ en cambio,
me parece que signific� solo _letra_ con exclusion de _escritura_ y
que esta significacion �ltima, dada por San Lucar, no es exacta.
_Titic_ no significa hoy dia _letra_ para la mayor parte, � por decir
mejor, para ningun tagalog, por la facil razon que significaba
precisamente la _letra propia de ellos_: hoy, como dichas letras �
caracteres han desaparecido, el vocablo _titic_ ha tenido forzosamente
que desaparecer, siguiendo la misma suerte de la _cosa significada_.
_Sulat_ que significaba _escritura_ contin�a, porqu� no tenia un
sentido tan estricto como _titic_.
